The International Monetary Fund has warned the Maldives of "debt distress" unless important policy changes are announced. The island nation's total foreign debt is over $3 billion with Chinese lenders making up almost 42% of it. IMF has attributed the country's struggles to rising commodity prices and a weakening tourism sector. President Mohamed Muizzu, who has followed a proChina policy, has called Chinese financial assistance "selfless". He has also asked Beijing to restructure the debt owed by the Maldives.
