In 2019, many of the world's leading human rights organizations cosigned a statement criticizing the MSC's certification for NOT identifying, preventing or protecting seafood workers from labor rights violations. In this video, I'm going to explain the global seafood or fishing industry's darkest secret human trafficking and slavery at sea.

Although the Thai fishing industry and prawn industry are globally notorious for being one of the most abusive and destructive economic sectors in the world, these are global systematic human rights issues. Forced labor & modern day slavery is endemic in the fishing industry, where the supply chains are remote and opaque. There are still slaveproduced seafood in the global market today, mainly from Southeast Asia, and this is directly lead by the growing/increasing demand for cheap seafood. Therefore the people in the developed western countries are consuming seafood produced by slaves/slavery.

The commercial fishing industry's serious damage to the ocean and the environment by its overfishing/bycatch, etc. is also what fuels these issues. The depletion/collapse of the marine life in the ocean is not just a global environmental issue, but also a global systematic human rights issue. They go hand in hand, and we are all responsible for them as consumers. The most certain and promising way for consumers to stop the degradation of the ocean and the abuse of human rights is to switch to plantbased protein, and live a vegan lifestyle for the Animals, the Planet, & the People.
