Are your crape myrtles turning black? Maybe you’ve even noticed the plants under your crape myrtles turning black as well. This is caused by scale. Scale is a pest that attaches itself to the crape myrtles and essentially, sucks the life out if it. The black goop that you see is actually a sooty mold caused by the scale’s…uhh.. poo. After some time of the scale’s byproduct sitting there, the mold begins to grow. To get rid of the mold, you first have to get rid of the scale.
