What Does the Witness Care Unit Do? | Going to Court as a Witness

Ministry of Justice

Have you heard of the Witness Charter? If you are called as a witness, you may feel some mixed emotions, including feeling daunted or scared. This is where the Witness Care Unit step in their job is to help you.

The Care Unit can refer you onto specialists to get help, will update you on the process of the case, can tell the court about any change of contact details, and support you on the day you give evidence and beyond.

They will also introduce you to the Witness Charter. This sets out the standards of care you can expect if you are a witness to a crime or incident in England and Wales.

It explains how you can expect to be treated by the police as a witness, and what help and support is available to you at every stage of the process of giving evidence. This Charter applies to all witnesses of a crime and to character witnesses but not expert witnesses. It does cover both prosecution and defence witnesses.
