So you’ve given a statement to the police. What next? Here’s a quick breakdown of how the justice process works.

First you make your statement to the police this might be because you were the victim of a crime or you witnessed an incident. The police take their case to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) who decide if the evidence is strong enough to take the case to court.

You might not hear anything for a while after this, but you’ll be kept informed by the police or Witness Care Unit. If there’s a delay, you’ll be kept updated, but if the case goes to court, you’ll receive a letter with all the information you need to know as a witness where, when and what court.

If you get called to court as a witness, you must go.
