UK Cave Diving - Holme Bank Chert Mine in 4K

Nomad Dive Logs

Diving Derbyshires Chert Mines, the Holme Bank mine in Bakewell. 3 dives conducted on May 6th, 2023 with Michael Thomas.

Holme Bank was in operation from 1778, on and off through to around 1960. The waste Limestone that was removed during the extraction of the Chert was repacked by the minders and used to reinforce the roof by building dry stone walls along the sides of the passageways. This can still be seen today both above and below the water line although there many collapses.

The estimated 150,000 tons of Chert removed and sold from this mine over almost 200 years of operation was primarily used for grinding flint for use in the pottery industry.

Both divers using an OC sidemount configuration.
