The fourthgeneration Highlander offers the choice between a powerful V6 or newgeneration hybrid powertrain, with the gas version offering up to a manufacturerestimated 24 MPG combined fuel economy and the Hybrid offering up to a manufacturerestimated 36 combined MPG. The newgeneration Toyota Hybrid System in the 2020 Highlander Hybrid combines a highefficiency 2.5liter DOHC fourcylinder engine with two electric motors in a system that’s more compact, and more efficient than before. The bottom line is an eyeopener for the efficiencyminded: 243 total system horsepower and up to a manufacturerestimated 36 combined MPG. The latter is a 24percent improvement over the previousgeneration Highlander Hybrid’s 29 combined MPG. Yet, Highlander Hybrid still delivers the everyday acceleration, power, and responsiveness that family buyers expect. In another Highlander first, the hybrid is now available in either 2WD or AWD, further expanding hybrid technology to a new group of buyers.

Test note: The Highlander Hybrid 4 cylinder had some variance when we tested multiple times the 060! The worst was over 9, and the best was 8.05. The best acceleration was not in sport mode! The fastest 060 was done in Trail mode, where the front wheel slip was minimal! Leave traction control on, or you will lose time at the start line. The new Toyota Highlander Hybrid 4cyl as a little bit less power than the previous 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid with the V6!
