The small island of Maria Madre on the Pacific coast of Mexico is a prison of a special kind. Three thousand detainees live in freedom accompanied by their families. Under the palm trees and on the white sand, their punishment feels like a vacation. Except that they are here to serve their sentence, with the horizon of the sea surrounding them as their cell gates. An island paradise which, even if it has effective virtues in terms of reintegration, does not resemble paradise on earth. Watchtowers, increased surveillance, we are indeed on a prison island.
