Many teachers get confused with screen sharing. You must understand when you share the screen of your computer, your students can see immediately what is on your screen. So the first thing that you need to do is to minimise your screen once you start screen sharing, so that they can see your desktop. I clearly show you how to use Skype for teaching online in this video and I explain the problem that most students/teachers have. I've been training teachers to work with Skype and teach online for many years.

It is possible to make money out of teaching online with Skype. It is a great tool, particularly for small classes but the screen share facility is absolutely vital. Let's imagine for example that you want to teach your class and you want your students to describe a picture. The thing that you can do is open the picture onto your screen,share your screen in Skype, so they can see your screen and see the picture too. Now they can describe it. It could also be really useful for example if you want to talk over some information in a document or in a graph. I use screen share many times to do these types of activities.

Teaching online with Skype is very popular. You can make use of the free tool. You don't need to pay for Skype to use it for teaching online. The screen share facility is available in the free tool. One interesting thing you can think about is actually getting your students to share their screens. This can be a great way of working. This can be a great way of them showing you the homework they've done or an article they've written. If you want them to describe a picture why not get them to share it and then talk about it.

Another example of where screen sharing Skype is really useful is when you want to talk through a PowerPoint presentation. You are able to open up the PowerPoint presentation, sharing it on Skype and then your students can see exactly what you're talking over. As you get more more confident with using screen share in Skype, you will realise that you can use it in many different ways and there are many different things that you can do in teaching and learning with the screen share facility.
