After growing grass from seed, the best way to manage weed pressure in a new lawn is to apply Mesotrione, the active ingredient in Tenacity. This herbicide stunts photosynthesis in many weeds killing them off while your grass germinates and slowly matures.
Because Mesotrione is soil mobile, meaning it can be uptaken by the leaf tissues of the weeds or by the root systems of those same weeds it makes sense to apply other soil mobile applications at the same time.
For me and my lawn spaces, I try to apply soluble mycorrhizae to benefit the root systems of my new grass, cytokinins to stimulate increased root development over shoot growth, and silica to promote tissue strength and resiliency.
Each of these products can be used together and watered into the soil every three weeks so a newly seeded location can grow and mature very quickly.
