Breed History

Shih Poos or Shoodles come from German and Chinese backgrounds. The breed was developed in North America by crossing a Miniature Poodle and a Shih Tzu. This exciting match of loyalty and intelligence created the Shih Poo. Their coats come in brindle, brown, cream, black, white, sable or, tan colors.

Temperament

Due to their breed history, Shih Poos have unbalanced personalities. They can have dominant characters either from their Poodle or Shih Tzu side, and this varies from dog to dog. Generally, they are devoted and friendly dogs, but they might exhibit timidity around strangers.

Shih Poos tend to bark a lot if they are not trained to do otherwise. They require early socialization to be able to behave properly as they grow. They aim to please their owners; hence, they are easy to train. They enjoy displaying tricks they have learned. It is tricky to get them to learn new skills, but hey! That’s what treats are for. Environment

Exercise

Shih Poos require daily walks and games to stay healthy. They are relatively active and will appreciate indoor games. Ensure you don’t get too physical to avoid causing internal injury. These small dogs are very delicate and should be handled with care.

Grooming

Certified as hypoallergenic dogs, Shih Poos have no shedding issues. Their coat stays clean and healthy with regular bathing and brushing. Depending on their dominant gene, they could have either curly or long, straight hair. Don’t cut your dog’s coat short towards winter. They need all the temperateness they can get. Trim their nails carefully. Their nails carry blood vessels, and you could pinch them with the clippers. Small dog breeds are very prone to periodontal illnesses.

Make it a habit of brushing your Shih Poo’s dents with the recommended toothbrush and toothpaste. Don’t forget to trim the coat around their genitals, and also carefully wipe around their eyes and ears. If you notice any strange smells, check for ear or skin infections.
