Shared Writing for Small Moments

Follow
Courtney Chan

This shared writing lesson is one component of balanced literacy and is introduced to Ms. Marrufo's 1st Grade class during her immersion week OR anytime there's an opportunity to create a shared "experience" together. Her students are working on personal narratives (small moments) and I created an "experience" together by dropping my markers which led to a narrative we could ALL participate in and create our shared writing together!

The purpose of shared writing is to demonstrate the writing process where the teacher holds the marker and the students are sharing their ideas to help compose the text together. Shared writing is also used as a preview of the new writing unit that the students will be starting independently the following week. The lesson takes about 810 minutes and everyday the teacher will continue to compose the piece with the students by practicing:
touching and telling the story across the pages
working on adding details to the illustrations
labeling
writing
rereading the piece for clarity
