Day 176 of my daily video posting project. I have been working on this project since November 2023posting a video of piano music every single day!

Today's video is Franz Schubert's "Scherzo in B flat Major" (D 593, Number 1). This piece is a List C (Romantic Period) selection in Level 8 of the Royal Conservatory of Music's examination repertoire. It was included in their Celebration Series 2015 edition.

I haven't played a lot of Schubert on my channelmainly because his pieces usually involve multiple page turns that are difficult to execute because your hands are ALWAYS moving!! This one I managed to squish down to three pages though and I didn't do all the repeats.

I had read that repeats were necessary in early piano historyyou were trying to make your music familiar to audiences, hence the repetition! (Plus it fills time during concerts). In Royal Conservatory of Music examinations, repeats are usually omitted anyways, so instead of making this video twice as long, I decided to skip the repeats. Also, there is a repeat of the Scherzo after you finish playing the Trio anyways, so I thought all the repetition made it too long.

The Scherzo is a very light piece and is in a nice key. B flat is pretty easy to play, and even the Trio's key of E flat is not too difficult either. Schubert likes to play with articulationthere are different accents, staccatos, slurs, and note values that make the rhythm a little more interesting. Some fun arpeggios and chord patterns are added into the mix too.

Tune in tomorrow for more of my #music.every.day experiment!
