Day 178 of my daily video posting project. I have been working on this project since November 2023posting a video of piano music every single day!

Today's video is Fantasie (Andante and Allegro) by Felix Mendelssohn from Opus 16, Number 1.

A Fantasie is a piece that is usually improvisatory in natureI always find that title to be funny, since just by the nature of it being written down, it is not really improvisatory. Maybe because the composition was originally improvised? In any case, the piece has a slow first section, a quicker middle section, and a return to the slow first section.

My tempo for the middle section is slightly slower than I have heard other people play itI did this in the interest of accuracy (there are a lot of hard chords in this one!!). I also skipped suggested repeats to relieve the pressure of trying to hit notes correctly twice in a row!!

Mendelssohn's melodies are pleasant to listen to and the middle section is very joyful. I think at the suggested speed, you miss some of those details of articulation and dynamics that I enjoy so much. Also, as I get olderI like things slowerhaha!
