The first thing we have on our list is a leash and collar! There are a ton of options out there from puppy leashes and collars to training collars. Young puppies generally do best on a flat collar. As they get older you can move to a training collar if needed. Just make sure the leash and collar you use is sturdy. A flat collar and a leather leash are fine for most young puppies! Avoid cheap cloth collars and retractable leashes!

The next items we cover on this list are grooming supplies. This can range from nail clippers to brushes. Which ones you get depends on your dog and their coat. The main focus here is to practice handling skills from day one to get them used to the vet, getting brushed, and groomed!

We love giving our dogs things to keep them busy. Keep in mind some of the chews we mention can be too tough for super young puppies, so make sure you are making the right call. Benebones and Bully sticks are some of our favorites.

Toys are super important for your puppy as well. Most puppies can be destructive, so make sure you are supervising them. We do not want puppies swallowing their toys so we avoid leaving soft toys in their crates. Balls are also another great toy for your dog. Just be mindful what size is appropriate for your puppy.

When toys are not enough to keep your dog busy, we love using the West Paw Toppl! These are a great slow feeder. You can stuff them with their favorite treats and even freeze them for a nice frozen snack! These can keep your puppy occupied for hours!

Some of the other puppy essentials are of course food and treats. There are a lot of options out there, but we stick to food that is more natural and has less chemicals and fillers. With treats, freeze dried treats without harsh chemicals are usually a safe bet.

Dog beds are also another great thing to get your puppy. Make sure you are supervising your puppy to make sure they are not chewing on their beds.

A dog crate is an absolute must. A crate is the only real way to successfully housebreak and house proof a puppy. If you need help sizing your dog's crate, please watch our crate sizing video.

The last two things to consider is to determine your house rules and your routine with your puppy. As a family, everyone needs to be on the same page in regards to what rules you will have with your puppy. One person allowing jumping while others trying to stop it overall is confusing for your puppy and will set training back. A daily route is also important to establish on day 1. This is for feeding, water, potty breaks, and even nap times. Consistency is key! Also make sure you have a well thought out training and socializing plan for your dog!
