I wanted to see how hard it is to do what Captain Sullenberger and co did in the famous double bird strike incident by landing the plane in the Hudson River. Safe to say it is much much harder than it looks. What you're seeing is probably the 20th attempt. You trade speed for altitude. Decrease your speed too much by staying too high for too long and you'll pay the price by not being fast enough when you get closer to the ground, meaning you'll stall and crash land. Attention is absolutely essential. I nose dived several times while squawking 7700 due to not paying attention to the controls and surroundings. Props to all involved in the real incident.
