The internet is full of content about how French women don’t get fat and the French stay slim. However, there is a dark side to the “why French women don’t get fat” hype and that is the fact that being thin is integrated into French society. My body image in France deteriorated because of the obsession with slimness and being thin that is expected especially of French women. I never realized that other expats in France also faced the same issue until I saw a video by Not even French and then I realized that it was not just me who felt overtly conscious of her body. My body confidence tanked after going moving to and living in Paris. Life in Paris is all glamorous until you are overweight in Paris or fat in France.
After moving to Paris and having lived there, I was unable to manage my food and stress which led to weight gain. Even though I lost that weight, the body image consciousness and did not leave me. This affected my eating habits as well as my relationship with my friends and family as I became obsessed with my calorie intake.
