Blood meal may not sound like something you would want in your garden, but it is actually a very useful gardening product.
It is widely available at major garden centres and home improvement stores.
Most gardeners use it as a fertilizer, but it can also be used to deter pests like squirrels and rabbits.
On the other hand, it can attract other critters that you may not want to visit your vegetable patch.
The "blood" in blood meal refers to the blood that is a byproduct of the slaughtering that occurs at meat packing plants.
It is most often cow blood but can be the blood of any animal slaughtered for its meat.
The blood is dried into a powder before being packaged for sale as blood meal.
In its capacity as a pest deterrent, the chief benefit of blood meal comes from its smell, which some animals find repulsive.
For example, it will repel deer, rabbits, and moles.
If you find your garden vegetables are being nibbled on, sprinkle blood meal lightly across the leaves and at the base of the plant.
Let’s take a look on how to repel certain types of animals with Blood meal.
1. DEER.
For bloodmeal to work as a deer repellent you must make sure that the deer can actually smell it.
The secret is getting the right concentration.
The most common way of applying this repellent is by combining it with water to make a light paste that can be spread on leaves.
For a stronger concentration, you can spread the actual dry blood meal around plants.
If you are using the dry blood meal, you should make sure it doesn’t touch the leaves as it can burn them.
It’s also possible to mix about 5 millilitre of peppercorns to 100 millilitre of blood meal in a container.
Next, transfer to small nylon stockings or cheesecloth's and punch openings into the bag and then mount the bags around your garden.
This third method may not be as effective as the first two, especially if you don’t use a lot of bags.
That said, the third technique is often used to protect large plants or nearby trees.
However there are some draw backs of using bloodmeal as a dear repellent.
It is important to realize that the effectiveness of blood deer repellent like other solutions is limited.
It does depend on the environment, how you apply it and when you apply it.
It may also depend on the population of deer you are dealing with because when the deer population is high or there’s a scarcity of food, it may become more challenging for deer to be deterred by this substance.
Also, blood meal is known to burn plants, and hence should be used sparingly.
Blood meal repellent is best used on plants that enjoy large nitrogen boosts like cabbage and broccoli.
Blood meal may also lose its potency in a few days so you need to reapply as quickly as possible.
Again, while it repels deer, it may also attract animals like dogs.
And if the dog eats the product, it may be harmful to them.
