How to Paint Sunlight

Follow
Ian Roberts

Last week we looked at a photo of a road and analyzed it for structure. We talked about the composition, structure, and the foundation of a painting before you begin to paint. We are trying to avoid getting “stuck” halfway through a painting!

The photo last week was in fact a structure of bands of sunlight and shadow. This week, I demonstrate blockingin the image & painting it.

I show that to paint sunshine, you have to keep in mind the two families of warmlight and darkcool color, and to keep them apart!

Because the design relies on such broad bands of sunlight and shadow, it presents a clear example of how to paint sunlight.

My palette: Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow Lemon, Cadmium Yellow Deep, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Orange, Cadmium Red Light, Alizarin Permanent, Quinacridone Magenta, Dioxazine Purple, Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt Blue, Chrome Oxide Green, Phthalo Green.
