We made an incubator at home and hatched baby chicks from the grocery store eggs! CUTECUTECUTE

Have you ever wondered if there's life in your fridge? And I don't mean fourweekold milk :D Well, Slime Sam and I did. And you won't believe where our experiment led us... But let me start from the beginning.

One night Sam and I were watching Angry Birds movie. Do you remember the moment when Red kicks his way out of the egg? Well, Sam saw it for the first time and shocked to his core! Only then he realized that's how baby chicks come to this world. Naturally (for Sam), he wanted to know if there are baby chicks in the grocery store eggs in our fridge. I tried explaining to him that it's not that simple. Eggs must be incubated by a chicken or in a special machine with regulated temperature and humidity that would imitate natural conditions. Did Sam listen to me? You got that right, of course, he didn't. So after I went to sleep he rushed to the fridge, fished the eggs out and tried to... err, incubate them. He warmed them up, he watered them, he nurtured them... but alas, nothing worked and his dream of becoming a bird daddy fell through.

He was so miserable that I decided to help him. His obsession wasn't totally unfamiliar to me. When I and my sister were kids, we read this book about a little boy who built an incubator at home and hatched little chickens! His parents helped him with the setup and all the settings, of course, but he and his friends watched and took care of the eggs for the entire 21 days needed for the eggs to develop into chicks. So yeah, we always wanted to do that, but our parents refused to help and we couldn't do it ourselves so we kind of gave up on the idea.

But Sam's passion reminded me of that experiment and I found information on how to hatch baby chicks at home! To make the experiment more challenging I decided to actually use store bought eggs, just like Sam suggested. We got to making a homemade incubator and hatching quail eggs to get new pets!

First, we made a box. We used thick styrofoam as a base material. It's light, durable and can help us maintain the necessary conditions. We thought it'd be easy to glue it together with duct tape. What a useful craft material! It's important to stick with the measurements in the video. If the box is too big, it'll be difficult to warm it all up to the desired temperature. If it's too small, it might heat up and heat is not recommended for future hatchlings.

Finish the setup with an electric bulb, small bowl of water and metal net. Make sure to replenish water when it evaporates and keep a steady temperature of 38 degrees Celcius. We got a small thermometer for that.

We followed through and got ourselves adorable baby quails! These tiny hatchlings actually hatched from the store bought eggs!

In the second part of the video we'll show you the chicks, tell you more about the quail care and share ideas on how to feed them and make sure they have enough water.

Would you take on this challenge?

FUN FACTS ABOUT QUAILS

It's interesting to know that quail hatchlings come out of the egg wellformed and they can leave the nest and follow their parents soon after birth. Not many babies can do that!

Quails can fly a short distance, but they spend most of their time on the ground.

And still, quails have been to space! They were the first Earth beings born at a space station.

Perhaps, you've wondered how baby birds can breathe inside the egg? They have no problems with that! Because the eggshell has several thousand pores able to let the air through!

And when the baby bird finally hatches, it comes out wet and able to see.

Speaking about eyesight! Quails and almost all other birds have a fullcolor vision, which means that they can see all the colors.

And they also dream, just like us!

Do you think all baby birds look alike? Even if you've answered yes, know that quails can make out over 100 faces among their fellow birds.

You're probably wondering if it is possible to become friends with a baby bird! They say that it's possible. Baby birds can get used to the presence of a human, follow them and consider them their friend.
