Several months ago, Amy told me that her cats were having diarrhea.  I told her that I usually used pumpkin to take care of loose stool and she asked how I did it.  So I made a little video for her and sent it to her.

Then about a month ago, I was over at her house and she goes, "Oh, Ash has diarrhea, do you want to do a video for Floppycats?"  So, I agreed.

This video shows what I do for a Charlie and Trigg (and apparently, Ash) when it comes to how to give your cat pumpkin to stop diarrhea.  Giving them pumpkin can also help with constipation ahhh, the beauty of fiber.

I don't have specific measurements in the video and even if I did, I am not sure you should follow them because, well, I am no expert.  This is just what I do and it works for us.  I usually use like 2 teaspoons of pumpkin and mix it with HOT water with a fork in a bowl.  Then I syringe it up usually about 2.5 ml and slowly squirt it in my cat's mouth.  My cats won't willingly eat pumpkin even when I mix the tiniest bit into their favorite wet food they both just look at me like I am crazy to think they would EVER eat something with pumpkin in it.  So that's why I syringe it.  However, you can always try offering your cat pumpkin puree (I like Farmer's Market Organic Canned Pumpkin) and see if they will eat it or mix the smallest amount (like a 1/2 teaspoon) into a full can of food to see if it will work.  I also shared this video on our Facebook page and many readers reported that their cats willingly eat pumpkin which is news to me!  I haven't met a cat I know yet that likes pumpkin.

I only do this (pumpkin puree with hot water syringe method) for 2 days (usually 1 dose of the 2.5 ml does the trick) and if the diarrhea persists after pumpkin treatments, then we are off to the vet to see if something more major is going on.

I always make sure I have a can of Farmer's Market Organic Canned Pumpkin on hand for cat diarrhea. You'll never think of canned pumpkin for anything else again ha ha.

"Slippery elm is best for diarrhea. Too much pumpkin can make diarrhea worse. And slippery elm works for constipation too. I learned about slippery elm in a book about cats. I cannot remember the author. As an emergency treatment, 4 caps in water, over low heat until it looks like snot. As a prophylactic, 1 cap to a can of food.

The way it works is that it makes a gel that covers the gastric and intestinal tract.

That gel stops the irritation that causes diarrhea and can also lubricate stool that gets stuck and dries out in the tract and can cause impaction.

This works in dogs, cats and people."
