   • Conduit Bending

In this video I will be discussing the formula on shrinkage on emt conduit. The shrinkage factor is something you need to know so when you start your electrical career and you start bending conduit you will understand how to measure and become an expert in your trade.
Bending emt conduit or any other conduit is an art. Bending Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT) conduit is a common practice in electrical installations to route wiring around corners, obstacles, and other structural elements. EMT conduit is made of galvanized steel or aluminum, and it's known for its flexibility and ease of bending. Here's how to bend EMT conduit:

*Tools and Materials Needed:*
1. EMT conduit (with wires if needed)
2. Conduit bender (hand or mechanical)
3. Measuring tape or ruler
4. Marker or pencil
5. Level (to ensure accurate bends)
6. Gloves and safety glasses (for protection)

*Steps for Bending EMT Conduit:*
1. *Measure and Mark:* Determine the location where you need to make a bend in the EMT conduit. Use a measuring tape or ruler to measure the distance from the end of the conduit to the point of the bend. Mark this point with a marker or pencil.

2. *Prepare the Bender:* If you're using a conduit bender, select the appropriate size bender for the EMT conduit you're working with. Make sure the bender shoe and hook are properly aligned and positioned.

3. *Place the Conduit:* Insert the EMT conduit into the bender so that the marked point lines up with the arrow or indicator on the bender. The arrow indicates where the bend will start.

4. *Position the Bender:* Position the bender on a stable surface, ensuring that it's level and securely anchored.

5. *Start Bending:* Applying even pressure, use the bender's handle to begin bending the conduit. Start with a gentle bend and gradually increase the pressure until you achieve the desired angle. Keep the conduit aligned with the arrow on the bender as you bend.

6. *Check the Angle:* As you bend, periodically check the angle using a level to ensure that it matches your intended angle. Adjust as needed.

7. *Complete the Bend:* Continue bending until the conduit reaches the desired angle. Be cautious not to overbend or kink the conduit. EMT conduit can be bent to a maximum angle of 90 degrees.

8. *Remove from Bender:* Once the bend is complete, carefully remove the conduit from the bender.

9. *Repeat if Necessary:* If you need additional bends or if the conduit needs to be shaped further, repeat the process using appropriate measurements and angles.

10. *Inspect the Bend:* Inspect the bend for any kinks, cracks, or deformities. Ensure that the conduit maintains its circular shape without any sharp bends that could damage the wires inside.

Remember that accuracy is crucial when bending conduit, especially when dealing with complex installations. It's advisable to practice on scrap pieces of conduit before working on your actual installation to ensure you're comfortable with the bending process. If you're uncertain or if your project involves intricate bends, consider consulting with a professional electrician for guidance. Additionally, always follow local electrical codes and safety guidelines when working with EMT conduit or any electrical components.
