Home made compass made with a piece of cork top, a needle, a magnet and a small container with water.

Cut a disc of cork and prick it through with the needle. Rub the tip of the needle several times on the magnet in order to magnetize it. The put the cork floating on the water container, i.e. a dish or a glass.
