Unlike what happens in other legal proceedings, you will not get a decision on the day of your Social Security disability hearing. Instead, the judge will send his notes and your file to a decision writer out of state to prepare a written decision either favorable (you win) or unfavorable (you lose).

As I discuss in this video, because Social Security is severely understaffed, delays in decision writing are at record levels. Depending on where you live, you could end up waiting 2, 3, 4 months or longer.

Payment processing has not been subject to long delays in general you can expect to see your first payment for both past due benefits and your ongoing monthly benefit within about a month after you receive your decision.

Yes, it is shameful that Social Security will make you wait weeks or months after your hearing for your award letter after you have already waited 2 years or longer for a court date. But once your hearing is over, there is little anyone can do about moving the process along.
