Making an unfamiliar appearance in the North West, GWR Castle Class 5043 'Earl of Mount Edgcumbe' is set to task on an unassisted run up the 1:76 Gradient of Shap Fells hauling Vintage Trains' "The Shap Mountaineer' to Carlisle, having picked up the tour at Carnforth from BR Class 47 47773. The 47 followed behind the tour light engine for the run up Shap, though 5043's strong performance up the incline proved any additional assistance unnecessary. Following a stop off in Carlisle, 5043 returned south, once again via Shap, continuing unassisted to Crewe, where 47773 took over for the remainder of the trip to Birmingham.

Complimenting 5043 was SR Unrebuilt Bulleid Battle of Britain Class 34067 'Tangmere', running the final "Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express" of the year. This saw the Bulleid following behind the Castle on the outward journey over Shap to Carlisle, before returning south over the Settle & Carlisle, where we catch the tour at Langwathby.
