In 2023, railway preservation celebrated 100 years since the formation of the 'Big Four' railway companies in 1923: The Southern Railway, the London Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) and the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER), in addition to the expansion of the already sizeable Great Western Railway (GWR). The past 12 months throughout 2023 have provided plentiful opportunities to view locomotives from each of the four companies, running on both heritage railways and the mainline, with the centenary also coinciding with other major 100 year celebrations, including the GWR Castle Class and LNER A3 Pacific 60103 'Flying Scotsman'.
