The 1950s were seen as a prosperous time for American society and culture. Postwar nuclear families had fallen in love with the automobile as new highways were built to further connect the nation. On the other hand, this was the beginning of the downfall for American passenger rail. Railroads were losing too much money to the competing cars, buses, and airplanes. So, the railroads reached out to automaker General Motors for an answer. They wanted a fast and flashy train to bring back riders. Their product would be a train that didn't look like anything anyone had ever seen before. But was it going to save the passenger rail industry?
