The purpose of the Jet Blast Deflectors, or JBDs, are to protect personnel and equipment from the jet exhaust and prop wash of aircraft spotted on, and launched from the catapult. Whenever an aircraft arrives to the catapult, an operator will ensure proper aircraft clearance and safety before he raises the JBDs. He also verifies the weight that the Weight Board Operator receives from the Pilot and relays it below decks.
