To test out a new Downrigger, I teamed up with my good friend Douglas from @PiscatorUKFishing to fish for one of the most mysterious and special fish in our Scottish waters. Ferox trout date back to the ice age and survive in the deeper lochs here in Scotland.

The current UK rodcaught record for the ferox trout is held by Brian Rutland, who landed a fish weighing 31 lbs 12 ozs from Loch Awe on 15th March 2002.

Where better to start our campaign to catch and release one of these piscivorous fish than the majestic Loch Awe. Having researched tackle and techniques we launched my Orkney Coastliner from Loch Awe Boats slipway and set off in what can only be described as less that favourable conditions. Douglas has put an embargo on my selecting dates for any future fishing adventures. I’m actually pleased to hand over the responsibility that element of planning.
