Fall Foliage Fail (A Wheaten’s Walk in the Park)

The plan. I had ordered a Rokinon 12mm f/2 and was going to test it out on my Sony a6400 during the peak of fall colors. What actually happened? It rained six straight days and on the seventh day it snowed. And then there were no more leaves left to see.

But, a few days before all that I did a walkthrough with the Sony 18105mm f/4 and experimented with my Sony AX53 for a travel sequence. After all, there would be plenty of time to get it right later in the week! I was going to pretend none of this ever happened but then I got bored. And I wanted to preserve for posterity the mess that is 2020 as well as all the political campaign signs I recorded along the roads. So, I decided to finally edit it anyway.

I had specifically subjected the camera to extreme contrasts and lessthanoptimum light in the woods, so I was very interested to see how the a6400 performed and how difficult it would be to grade after. In the beginning sequence I intentionally pointed the camera into a dark car interior while inducing sun glare – and was actually pleased with the results. The only problem was finding a happy medium that matched the prior shot. But I am annoyed how easily the different tinting between the front and back windows showed up. That is a new one for me for a future checklist.

A warning. While the camera was mounted on a WeebillS, I basically “jogged” around the park with my dog. No ninja walk – so there is plenty of bouncing. I thought about adding stabilization in post, but decided to leave it “as is”.

And a final note. If you pay careful attention, at 0:51 when I go over and down the last northbound ridge you can see Lake Erie – 11 miles away!
