By teaching students to assess their own work, it allows them to track their own progress and gives them ownership over the process, which then teaches them responsibility. A tool that involves selfassessment is called K.W.L. K – which stands for what students already know about a subject. W – which stands for what students want to learn about a subject. And L – which stands for what students have learned. K.W.L. uses higher order thinking which allows students to take charge of their own learning.
