Model shown: Honda City 5MT GM 20092014. Similar engine to the Honda Jazz GE8, Honda Fit.

This was an experiment to see what would happen if I switched to a thinner oil on an old engine. Usually, and mechanics say this, that as your engine wears out switch to a thicker oil. My engine is in good health, so I didnt see it as being a disaster.

This test covers two years with fuel mileage data between colder months of November till Feburary. I went from 5w30 to 0w20. Milleage did improve by 1.2km more per litre, however consumption did increase. This wasnt a suprise as the oil is thinner.

Vehicle manufacturers are switching to thinner oils to meet stricter emission stanards. They also want to improve fuel milleage/economy. Plus, the tolerances for moderns engines are tighter, so thinner oils are better as it flows better through small passages. This is why changing your oil on time is very important so that these passages do not get blocked with sludge or gunk.

However, the difference between 0w20 and 5w30 isnt a lot. I live in a very hot climate where temps will easily cross 40 deg C (104F). I personally do not believe I will see more added wear on cold starts. But on the other end of the specturm when the oil is hot, this is where I see the added benefit of a 30 weight over a 20 weight oil. This is assuming that the manufacturer calls for 0w20 oil as the recommended one. If I was in a cold climate, then 0w20 makes more sense, more easier flow on cold starts, overall engine operating temps would be lower.

I have linked the video by @ProjectFarm that shows evidence of more wear with thinner oils. He tested 0w16, 0w20, 5w20 and 5w30. He does ask the right question, would an engine last upto 300,000 kms or miles on thinner oil compared to a thicker oil? Only time will tell.

comparison of thin and thick engine oil
does thinner oil give better fuel mileage
does thicker oil protect an engine better
are engine oils too thin
thinner engine oil burns more
0w20 or 5w30 engine oil
does thinner engine oil save money
is thinner engine oil safe for the engine.
