► For any young person, leaving home and starting to live independently is a huge milestone. But what if your childhood has been spent in different foster placements or children's homes? How do you learn to manage if your early life has been so disrupted?

That's the reality for more than 10,000 young people coming out of care every year. Having been looked after sometimes by many carers suddenly, they're expected to become adults overnight.

A 5 News investigation has found local authorities are struggling to pay for support for care leavers and that's having a damaging effect on those teenagers at the sharp end.
