The Borzois dogs may look fancy and glamorous, but they were originally bred to hunt wolves, hares, and foxes. They depended on their speed and hunting instincts and great endurance to catch their prey. These dog breeds were used by the Russians to do lavish hunting expeditions and were known as Russian Wolfhound. The dogs would be kept in packs of a hundred Borzois and they would run after wolves and pin them down as they waited for the hunter to catch up. In some instances, the hunters would release the wolf for it to be hunted another time. The breed was popular for hunting in Russia and they almost became extinct when the nobles could no longer afford the lavish hunting sport. Today, this dog breed is a great companion despite. However, it still posses the quality of a hunting dog. It is a sighthound and can chase and track its prey by sight. Besides, they can chase anything that moves and need to be leashed when playing in unfenced areas.

Although calm and quiet when indoors, the Borzoi is a type of giant dog breed that has great size and strength. This dog breed is considered the tallest sighthound after the Irish wolfhound. The male Borzoi stands at 28 inches to 32 inches tall and weighs between 75 and 105 pounds. Females are more feminine and slightly shorter and lighter than their male counterparts. Despite their giant size, Borzoi dogs are shy, gentle, and make good companions. They are affectionate with their families and polite but reserved with people.
