On a chilly late December day, we drove up to the Northernmost part of Arizona to the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument. It is here we visited the other worldly hiking locations of White Pocket and Coyote Buttes South.

The Vermilion Cliffs host over 280,000 acres of unspoiled, remote land protected and monitored by the Bureau of Land Management. There are no visitor centers, no developed campsites and, for the most part, no crowds. But this area is home to some of the most interesting and beautiful geologic treasures in the world. These places are only reachable by high ground clearance fourwheel drive vehicles and the buttes require a permit that limits visitation to just 20 folks per day. But the effort will be rewarded: each site provides jawdropping scenery and miles of unmarked trails that make you believe that you’re navigating the terrain on a distant planet.

We sequestered the assistance of the Kenab Tour Company to take us through the rugged roads and guide us through these two interesting but intimidating hiking areas.

With such a unique environment, the movie “Ant Man and the Wasp,” due to release in early 2023, used the White Pocket trail as one of their filming locations.
