Ancient Blacksmith Hammer Restoration

Follow
Cannon Colossus

I won't lie, I have a ton of old hammers laying around. Some are in great condition, while others, like this rusty blacksmith hammer, have seen better days.

I started this restoration by removing the original, wornout handle. After all these years, it was still secured pretty well and hand two metal wedges to make sure it wasn't going anywhere.

Once removed, I proceeded to remove the rust with a wire wheel and grind down the head with a flap disc to remove pitting. To make sure everything was perfectly even, I gave it a number of passes on the belt sander and the strike face was shaped up with a disc sander.

The handle was made from an old piece of wood I had laying around and was hand shaped with a rasp. Final shaping was done with 120 grit and 400 grid sandpaper, respectively. It was finished off by cleaning with mineral spirits and a nice coat of boiled linseed oil.

Finally, everything was put back together and the head was secured with a wooden wedge and a round wedge. I find the round wedges offer the most stability and reliability when compared to normal wedges.

Allinall, I think it turned out great and I can't wait to put it to work.
