Perfect Rusty Old Hammer Restoration

RRC Restoration

This week i tackle the restoration of an rusty old hammer i found discarded in a quarry that closed down around 40 years ago so i can only assume it belonged to one of the old engineers that worked there once upon a time.

Its a pretty simple restoration job but very satisfying. First thing to do was remove the old and extremely deteriorated handle this was done by drilling a couple of large holes down each side to release a bit of the pressure from the old wedges then a few blows with the hammer and chisel finish the job off and im left with a very rusty hammer head ready for its rust removal treatment.

To remove the rust i used the old favorite on this channel deox c, After its bath you can see that the steel is completely free of rust and can now be worked on properly.

I broke out the belt sander and ground all the faces flat and and rounded the edges off and removed any chips on the steel. I could have stopped at this stage and put a new handle on but i wanted to go the extra mile so mirror polish it is ;).

I put a buffing wheel on the pillar drill and used a high cutting emery compound to remove all the sanding marks and leave a mirror finish on the steel which i think you'll agree looks fabulous!

Once it was all polished i wanted to add a little bit of contrast between the rough surface i left and the smooth polished surface so i used a bluing chemical to oxidize the surface and turn it black and it really adds the contrast i was looking for.

At this stage i was now happy with the hammer head so i moved onto rasping a new handle into shape, once a nice tight fit was created i knocked in a nice hardwood wedge then locked this into place with a further 2 steel wedges going perpendicular to the wooden wedge this locks the handle on for good.

Then i coated the full hammer with a liberal coat of danish oil and left it to soak in while i tidied up the workshop. Once the excess was buffed off im left with a gorgeous hammer that hopefully will last a long long long time!

Thank you for watching and i hope you enjoyed this restoration as much as you've enjoyed my other videos.

A new addition to my videos from now on will be a water mark and my channel name popping up in random places throughout the video as im getting rather tired of people reuploading my content as their own i hope you guys understand.
