The American Bully arose from the desire to have a dog completely compliant, with both people and animals, but it had a strong and heavy appearance. In the late 1980s, David Wilson, a former pitbull admirer, became interested in blue Amstaffs "Dual Registered" dogs (blue double dogs UKC, AKC, Amstaffs registered as Pit Bulls in UKC). He started his creation with these blue Amstaffs dogs), and developed the lineage, Razor Edge. After a few years of selection, in the mid1990s, the lineage attracted attention because of its blue color, (blue nose) and sturdy and compact body. Then, these intimidating dogs were nicknamed "Bully Style" and became popular. At the same time, came the other two similar lineages that share genetic links to each other, Gotti bloodline, and the Gray bloodline.

In the 2000s, other breeders, who wanted to breed smallbuffalo dogs, began to hybridize to these lineages, crossing them with other dog breeds (Bulldog, French Bulldog, American Bulldog, etc.). American Bully, and its variants: pocket, standard, classic, extreme, and giant, which differ in size and weight. Among these varieties, only the "standard" is recognized by the UKC (United Kennel Club). The ABKC (American Bully Kennel Club) recognizes all varieties.
