The origins of the American Pit Bull Terrier are closely linked to the American Staffordshire Terrier. Both races are from the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, taken from England to America in the late nineteenth century.

This English dog is basically used as a fighting dog, and for this reason the prestigious American Kennel Club (AKC) rejected his registration. Because of this refusal, he was founded United Kennel Club (UKC), in order to register the know today as American Pit Bull Terrier.

Moreover, the AKC finally decided to register these dogs home English under the name American Staffordshire Terrier, and raised them to participate in exhibitions of beauty.

In the late 30s, the dogs registered with the AKC and the UKC were exactly the same race. It was during the 80s that the two races went their separate ways, dogs of different clubs began developing differences both physically and in temperament and so each club began to define their own standard.

Characteristics.
The APBT (American Pit Bull Terrier) is a medium sized dog, males typically weighing 16 to 30 kg and females 13 to 25 kg. They are athletically built and breeding focuses mainly on the character and performance of functional dog.

The American Pit Bull Terrier is a medium sized dog, with solidly built, short and smooth coat, with a welldefined musculature. This race is as powerful as athletic. The body is slightly longer than tall, females can be slightly longer in body than males. The length of the forelegs (point measurement from elbow to ground) is approximately equal to one half of the dog's height at the withers. The head is of medium length with a broad skull, flat, and a wide, deep muzzle. The ears are small to medium, high placement, and may be cut or uncut. The relatively short tail is set low, thick at the base and placement tuned at the tip. The American Pit Bull Terrier can be of all colors except merles (merle). This breed combines strength and athleticism with grace and agility and should never appear heavy, or limited muscle, or thin bones (weak), and long legs.
