If you don't have a serger, or are new to sewing, here's various different techniques for finishing the raw edges of the garments. There's also some in there that can be used for purely decorative reasons.

Why do we need to finish the raw edges? If we don't, the fabric will fray and eventually destroy itself through regular wear and tear. Also, one wash of the garments and they'll be gone.
