Abashiri Prison Museum

The Abashiri Prison Museum is an outdoor museum of history where buildings of the original Abashiri Prison are conserved and exhibited.
Many of the old prison buildings at the Abashiri Prison Museum are wooden buildings that were constructed more than 100 years ago.
Abashiri Prison, which was built on the Abashiri River, is accessible only by crossing Kagami Bridge.
Kagami is Japanese for "mirror". The bridge was given this name in the hope that the inmates would look into the clear stream and reflect on who they were and who they might become before they crossed the bridge to their destinations.

The Main Gate of Abashiri Prison is called “the redbrick gate”. This massive, imposing gate attests to how stately Abashiri Prison was when people talked about it as a forbidding place and called it "the prison in the farthest land". There is one room on either side of the Main Gate. One was used by a prison guard as a reception office, and the other was used by visiting families of inmates for necessary procedures and waiting.
The glossy bricks accentuating red bricks were fired at temperatures of 1,160 ℃ or higher. The kiln contained salt, which decomposes at high temperatures. Bricks fired in this way are a blackish brown, look as if they are glazed, and are 2030% smaller than ordinary bricks. Because it's not possible to use this firing technique today, the reconstructed Main Gate is significant for learning about the history of brick buildings.

博物館網走監獄

博物館網走監獄は、旧網走刑務所の建物を保存・展示する野外歴史博物館です。
博物館網走監獄の旧刑務所建物の多くは100年以上前に作られた木造建築物です。
敷地面積は約東京ドーム46,755m²の3.5個分です。
「鏡橋」網走川の向こう岸に網走刑務所が設置されているため、橋を渡らなくては出入りすることはできない。
橋の名前には「流れる清流を鏡として、我が身を見つめ、自ら襟をただし目的の岸にわたるべし」との思いが込められています。

通称「赤レンガ門」と呼ばれる網走刑務所正門は、重厚で威風堂々としており「最果ての監獄」と呼ばれ恐れられた時代の網走刑務所の威厳を感じさせます。 正門の左右には部屋が設けられ、一方は、正門担当看守が受け付けとして使い、もう一方は、面会に来た家族が申しこみと待合室に使いました。
赤レンガを際立たせている表面に艶のある煉瓦は、窯の中に塩を入れ、塩が分解する1,160度以上の高温で焼き上げるため、独特の釉薬をかけたような黒褐色の色をしており、形も普通の煉瓦より20 30小さいのが特徴です。 現在はこのような焼き方はできないため、ここに復原した門はレンガ建築の歴史を知るうえで重要なものです。
