2nd Gen Ford Escape Transmission Fluid Change - Improving Shift Quality

Follow
Steves Garage

In this Steve's Garage video I go over Fords procedure to change the transmission fluid in a 2nd gen Ford Escape, Mercury Mariner, or MazdaTribute. My goal with this transmission fluid change was to improve the shift quality of the 23 shift in my Ford Escape. When the Ford Escape is cold, I experience a rough shift from 23.

Because the 0812 Ford Escapes have a sealed transmission, and nonserviceable transmission filter, your only option is to drain the fluid and refill. The Ford service manual suggests draining and filling the transmission 3 times in order to fully flush the transmission of the old fluid.

This is a good service for a Ford Escape even if you aren't experiencing rough shifts, because the concept of lifetime transmission fluid is debatable. There are many 0812 Ford Escape owners who are experiencing transmission shift problems so this is far from an isolated incident.

If you have a procedure you'd like to share, please leave it in the comments! I'd love to know how you've gotten your CD2 chassis vehicle to shift better.
