Chads Prep

Chad provides a comprehensive lesson on Generators and Motors. A generator converts mechanical work into electrical energy. It consists of a coil rotating in a magnetic field resulting in an induced emf and current in the coil. The formula for the emf of a generator is presented and derived. The emf created by a generator is sinusoidal giving rise to alternating current (AC) that reverses polarity continuously. A motor is effectively a generator run in reverse. It converts electrical energy into mechanical work. A current in a coil in a magnetic field results in rotation of the coil. But this rotation also results in a change in magnetic flux through the coil resulting in an induced emf, termed back emf, that opposes the flow of current in the coil according to Lenz's law.
