Superb 1980 Volkswagen Golf 1.8L GLi MkI Series 1 Convertible. Brand new in the early 80s. 1.8 'GTi Engineering' engine (specialist tuning company formed with motor racing as a backdrop with Richard Lloyd their founder having won a hattrick of British Saloon Car Championship class wins in his Golf GTi from 1977) The Series 1 has two round binnacles in the centre of the dashboard, the classic Golf ball gearknob is present as is the rare and original Wolfsburg steering wheel which was only fitted to the Series 1 GTi’s. 'The convertible version, named the Golf Cabriolet (or Type 155) in Europe and Canada ("Rabbit Convertible" in America originally and renamed in 1985 to "Cabriolet"), was sold from 1980 to 1993. It had a reinforced body, transverse roll bar, and a high level of trim, and kept the pre1980 style of rear lamp clusters. The Mk1 Cabriolet is of unibody construction built entirely at the factory of Karmann, from stamping to final assembly; Volkswagen supplied the engine, suspension, interior, etc. for Karmann to install. The vinyl or cloth tops were heavily insulated and manually operated, with a heated glass rear window.... Prior to the 1984 model year the highest standard specification was the GLI, essentially a GTI but sporting a different moniker. It was only in late 1983 with the introduction of the 1984 model that an officially badged GTI version of the cabriolet finally became available.' Extensive history file: Lovely example of an early Golf Convertible from longterm ownership...Owned by the previous owner for an amazing 36 years! Showing a mere 51,000 miles from new. Comprehensive history file dating back, including MOTs and Tax discs. Supplied with a rare German fulltonneau cover. A great way into the Volkswagen scene or a great opportunity into the world of classic motoring, Nearly the same is never the same. A car to cherish as the next proud custonian.
