6 Years ago a Lioness at the National Zoological Gardens in Sri Lanka, gave birth to four cubs, but unfortunately three died. One escaped. The mother refused to feed the cub. Doctors at the Zoo had to find another option to feed the cub. At the same time a Labrador Retriever called “Shelly” became a mother of six puppies. Doctors of the Zoo got to know about Shelly, they have contacted Mr. Heshan Mendis who is the owner of Shelly and ask whether he can keep the lion cub for some time at his place so the Labrador can feed the cub. He agreed to keep the Lion cub and nursed by his Labrador mother. As he told, it was a very challenging and difficult task for him. Finally with so much of effort and the hard work of Heshan and his team (Driftneyland Labradors) has rescued the life of this Lion Cub.
Today is his 6th birthday. Me and my team, Travel with Lahiru went to the “Ridiyagama Safari Park” along with Heshan and his family to see the Lion on his Birth Day. Heshan had his last visit to see the Lion in 2016. We have a doubt whether the Lion could recognize Heshan today, because now he lives in an open area with other Lions. The Zoo keepers has isolated the Lion in order we could go near to him. Long time he was looking at Heshan, but didn’t come near him. But finally the lion recognized Heshan, came close to him. Heshan petted the Lion as a child and he kissed him. It was an amazing thing happened in front of our eyes. We couldn’t believe our eyes. Love between Heshan and Lion made everyone very emotional. Even after so many years he recognized the person who saved his life.

මීට වසර 6 කට පෙර ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ ජාතික සත්ව උද්‍යානයේ සිංහයෙකු පැටවුන් සිව්දෙනෙකු බිහි කළ නමුත් අවාසනාවකට තිදෙනෙක් මිය ගියහ. එක් අයෙක් පැන ගියේය. පැටියා පෝෂණය කිරීම මව ප්‍රතික්ෂේප කළාය. සත්වෝද්‍යානයේ වෛද්‍යවරුන්ට පැටවා පෝෂණය කිරීම සඳහා තවත් විකල්පයක් සොයා ගැනීමට සිදු විය. ඒ අතරම “ෂෙලි” නම් වූ ලැබ්‍රඩෝ රිට්‍රීවර් බලු පැටවුන් හය දෙනෙකුගේ මවක් විය. සත්වෝද්‍යානයේ වෛද්‍යවරු ෂෙලි ගැන දැන ගත්හ. ඔවුන් ෂෙලිගේ හිමිකරු වන හේෂන් මෙන්ඩිස් මහතා අමතා ඔහුට සිංහ පැටවා තම ස්ථානයේ යම් කාලයක් තබා ගත හැකිදැයි විමසා ඇත. එවිට ලැබ්‍රඩෝට පැටියා පෝෂණය කළ හැකිය. ඔහු සිංහ පැටවා තබා ගැනීමට එකඟ වූ අතර ඔහුගේ ලැබ්‍රඩෝ මව විසින් කිරි දෙන ලදී. ඔහු පැවසූ පරිදි එය ඔහුට ඉතා අභියෝගාත්මක හා දුෂ්කර කාර්යයක් විය. අවසානයේදී හේෂාන් සහ ඔහුගේ කණ්ඩායම (ඩ්‍රයිෆ්ට්නිලන්ඩ් ලැබ්‍රඩෝර්ස්) වෙහෙස මහන්සි වී මෙම සිංහ පැටවාගේ ජීවිතය බේරාගෙන තිබේ.
අද ඔහුගේ 6 වන උපන් දිනයයි. මා සහ මගේ කණ්ඩායම, ඔහුගේ උපන් දිනයේදී සිංහයා බැලීමට හේෂාන් සහ ඔහුගේ පවුලේ අය සමඟ “රිදියගම සෆාරි උද්‍යානය” වෙත ගියෙමු. හේෂාන් අවසන් වරට සිංහයා බැලීමට පැමිණියේ 2016 දී ය. සිංහයාට අද හේෂාන් හඳුනාගත හැකි දැයි අපට සැකයක් ඇත, මන්ද ඔහු දැන් ජීවත් වන්නේ වෙනත් සිංහයන් සමඟ විවෘත ප්‍රදේශයක ය. සත්වෝද්‍යාන පාලකයෝ සිංහයා හුදෙකලා කර ඇත්තේ අපට ඔහු වෙතට යා හැකි බැවිනි. ඔහු හේෂාන් දෙස බොහෝ වේලාවක් බලා සිටියද ඔහු අසලට පැමිණියේ නැත. නමුත් අවසානයේදී සිංහයා හේෂන්ව හඳුනාගෙන ඔහු අසලට පැමිණියේය. හේෂාන් කුඩා කාලයේදී සිංහයාට සුරතල් කළ අතර ඔහු සිප ගත්තේය. එය අපේ ඇස් ඉදිරිපිට සිදු වූ පුදුමාකාර දෙයක්. අපට අපගේ ඇස් විශ්වාස කළ නොහැක. හේෂාන් සහ සිංහයා අතර ඇති ආදරය සෑම කෙනෙකුටම ඉතා හැඟීම්බර විය. වසර ගණනාවකට පසු පවා ඔහු තම ජීවිතය බේරාගත් පුද්ගලයා හඳුනා ගත්තේය.
සිංහයාගේ 6 වන උපන්දිනය වෙනුවෙන් මෙම පුදුමාකාර අත්දැකීම ලබා ගැනීමට අපට ආරාධනා කිරීම ගැන අපි හේෂන්ට ස්තූතිවන්ත වෙමු.
