In this video I experiment a little bit with electrolysis, trying to clean a rusty screw, and without any elaborate setup.
I simply connect a wire to the screw and to the negative terminal of a 12V battery, and another wire to the positive terminal of the battery.
I dip the screw all the way down to the bottom of the jar, and after stripping the positive wire, I set it up so that it is dipped in water, but high enough so that it won't touch the screw in the bottom.
After a little while small boubles started comming out of the screw, and the copper of the wire strands began to desolve in the water, slowly turning the water blue.
As you can see in the end of the video, after 6 hours of waiting, the only thing I have to show is a jar with blue water and nothing else. The rust wasn't removed from the screw.
And the fact is that I didn't add any salt to the water. I only used pure tap water. With whatever metals it might have in it.
So as a result, this method is not suggested for rust removal, unless you have a better idea. Maybe adding something to the water. Feel free to comment on that.
