MUSEI EREMITANI ARCHEOLOGY SECTOR

The room you see in this video is the Mosaic Room, where you can appreciate the beautiful materials found during excavations carried out at the end of the 19th century in the area of the Railway Station, an area affected by the presence of an extensive necropolis, still not fully known in its overall articulation, are exhibited.

During expansion works on the north side of the Station, an archaeologist from Padua, Luigi Busato, conducted a series of excavations between 1877 and 1879, recovering some funerary monuments and a series of grave goods. Alongside traditional ceramic objects plates, cups, pitchers, and glasses useful for understanding the habits of the citizens of ancient Patavium between the 1st and 2nd centuries AD there are materials related to daily life such as glass gaming pieces, metal locks and keys, but also numerous objects from the female world for personal care: perfume balsam bottles, mirrors, tweezers, spatulas. Also numerous are the fibulae, small buckles for fastening garments, which, together with the glass beads of the necklaces, speak of the fashion of the time.

Finally, particularly significant for scholars is a limestone herma depicting the god Hermes in his quality as Psychopomp, that is, as a guide of souls to the afterlife. It is one of the rare examples in northern Italy of this representation in a funerary context.

Also, in the Mosaic Room, there is the exhibition of an extraordinary funerary set from the Roman necropolis to the east of the city. An excavation carried out in 1997 by the Superintendence for Archaeological Heritage of Veneto between Via Gattamelata and Giustiniani led to the discovery of a tomb.
