Estrella SantosZacaria, a transgender woman from Guatemala, is seeking asylum in the U.S., but she’s been dealt a number of setbacks over the past few years. She’s been deported twice and spent a year in jail after being detained by immigration authorities. But when lawyers Benjamin Osorio and Karina Ramos, found through the SPLC’s Southeast Immigrant Freedom Initiative, took on her case, SantosZacaria says she was grateful for their support.
Following a U.S. Supreme Court decision in May 2023, SantosZacaria has another opportunity to fight her deportation, and she has returned to Los Angeles. “Now it’s like I am born again,” she says.
