Sunrise Highway (County Road S1) is a road that runs through the Cleveland National Forest and showcases the Laguna Recreation Area which is east of San Diego. It runs North from I8 at Laguna Summit/Old Highway 80 (Exit 47) to California State Route 79 near Cuyamaca Lake. Rising from around 4000′ to just over 6000′, the roadway is very scenic with many pull off areas to take in the views. This roadway is popular with bicyclists and motorcyclists as well. The highway was originally built in the 1920’s though the modern roadway was constructed between 1950 and 1975. Two major realignments were constructed near Wooded Hill and Kwaaymii Point eliminating two bad sections with persistent rockslide and snow problems. In winter, snow can be abundant and most of San Diego likes to visit the area anytime a good dumping occurs. Go early if you decide to go up to this area to enjoy the snow. It can get quite chaotic.

The Mountain Laguna Recreation Area is west of the Sawtooth Mountains Wilderness and Anza Borrego Desert State Park.

The reason the road got it name is because of all of the amazing sunrises that can be viewed from the road from start to finish. It also got its name because of being known for its stunning mountain meadows and wide panoramas, this drive is blanketed with natural beauty and wonder.
