Why I slept on the couch for 3 weeks -Holly's Vestibular Disease

Follow
Michael DrT Tokiwa - The Collaborative Vet

Vestibular disease in older Dogs can occur, and it is can be surprisingly sudden in it's onset and signs. Holly's presentation was no exception, and what concerned me as a Pet Parent was the duration she was unable to move! It can be caused by primary neurological disase, inner ear infection or in many cases is idiopathic in origin. Medications such as antibiotics and antinaussea drugs like dramamine (meclizine) are routinely used to help alleviate the symptoms until the pets recover. Sometimes, the head tilt can remain for prolonged periods. Holly was unable to negotiate stairs, so I slept downstairs with her everynight. UPDATE: we had a major breakthrough last night when she was able to come up the stairs on her own! Special thansk to Dr.s Peter Chapman and Joe Eagleson at VSEC for their guidance on Holly's care. If your dog suddenly presents unable to walk, eyes darting to one side, call your vet immediately.
